This is very time consuming, and it should be a seamless process for people upgrading to Windows 7. But the PCL 5 and PCL 6 don't work for the laserjet 1300. I don't doubt that some respondents have gotten it to work - somehow, and the details are often left out.
I have a HP Laserjet 1300 and the driversprovided do not work for it.
I don't know if the driver that was automatically found is the same as the generic driver you're using, but it does not seem to be the "Universal Print Driver." The one I have seems to be hpLaserJet 1300 PCL 5 (61.53.25.9) based on the "About" tab of Printer Properties. I then re-connected the LJ 1300 to my XP computer and changed the port on the Win 7 computer to point to the XP share. It downloaded and installed whatever it found and finally the LJ1300 was installed. First it found the USB_DOT4 driver, then a PRN_DOT4 Driver, and finally - after several minutes - found a printer driver that it liked. Sure enough, Windows recognized the device and then started looking for drivers. Which driver did you install?
